All goods imported from Japan would be subject to radiation testing: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has said that all goods imported from Japan would be subject to radiation testing and has told all laboratories operating in the border ports to carry out the tests on all consumer items arriving from the quake-hit country. In its notification to the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry emphasised the necessity of conducting tests to ensure they were free from any radioactive contamination.Saudi Arabia's official news agency SPA reported that the move comes in the wake of Japan continuing its battle to avert a major nuclear disaster following the impact of last week's earthquake and tsunami. Workers were on Wednesday ordered to withdraw briefly from a stricken Japanese nuclear power plant after radiation levels surged. This development has suggested that the crisis was spiralling out of control. The Ministry also said that no certificates should be granted to approve goods until radiation tests are carried out.
