Congress President Sonia Gandhi today expressed shock over the killing of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in Mumbai. In a message, Mrs. Gandhi said that such dastardly acts will not be tolerated in civilised society. She said she is confident that the state government led by senior party leader Prithviraj Chavan will act fast and decisively and leave no stone unturned to investigate the murder.Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni condemning the killing described it as a sign of insanity perpetuated by mindless individuals in which innocent citizens are killed. Prime Minister's Media Advisor has termed it as shocking and unacceptable.The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan called a meeting on the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey. The meeting was attended by State Home Minister R.R. Patil, Additional Chief Home secretary of Maharashtra, Director General of Police, Commissioner of Police and senior Police officers.The postmortem report of Dey showed that 5 bullets were recovered from the body. His body was cremated today at the Rajawadi crematorium in Ghatkopar, in Mumbai. Many senior officials along with Maharashtra tourism minister paid tribute to the journalist and said that the culprits must not be spared. The 56-year-old senior investigative journalist, who extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades, was shot dead yesterday by four motorbike-borne persons in Mumbai's suburban Powai. Dey, Editor (Special Investigation) with an English eveninger was riding his motorcycle when he was gunned down. He was rushed to nearby Hiranandani hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police sources said Dey, who recently ran a series of stories on oil mafia, had received threats from anti-social elements. He had also written two books on oil mafia and the underworld.Prime Minister's Media Advisor has termed it as shocking and unacceptable.Journalist organizations in Mumbai have decided to organize a protest rally at Mantralaya on Monday. Press Club Mumbai has demanded immediate investigation and action against the culprits.
