Al Qaeda, Taliban are getting safe havens in Pakistan: US

The United States has acknowledged India's vital role in the war against terror in the region. In an interview to a TV channel, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, New Delhi is more than concerned with the overall outcome in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Reiterating that terrorists have safe havens in Pakistan, he said it causes the US great problems in Afghanistan as well. Admiral Mike Mullen said, driven out of Afghanistan by the US-led international coalition forces, the Taliban and al-Qaeda have now moved to Pakistan. He again asked the ISI to change its relationship with the extremist elements. Acknowledging that Haqqani network operates in the tribal areas of Pakistan, Mullen said they have a safe haven there. Refering to Iran, the top US military commander said, Washington has an attack plan to prevent the Islamic nation from acquiring nuclear weapons, even as it is “extremely concerned” about the possible repercussions of such a strike. Admiral Mullen held out hope that a combination of international diplomatic efforts and sanctions against Iran would lead Tehran to suspend a nuclear enrichment programme that many believe is a clandestine bid to develop atomic arms.
