Akshay Urja Diwas celebrated in Punjab

In Punjab, the Akshay Urja Diwas was celebrated at Pushpa Gujral Science City in Kapurthala. A function was organised on this occasion in which students from various schools and colleges and visitors participated. The Chairman of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), Manjit Singh said in his key-note address that the ever growing demand for fuel, fast depleting conventional sources of energy is resulting in increased environment pollution. He said, it leaves no option except to go for the development and adoption of alternative and non-conventional sources of energy. AIR correspondent reports, PEDA Chairman, Manjit Singh said the state of Punjab is well endowed with abundant supply of renewable energy sources and PEDA is putting lot of efforts to promote, develop and implement usage of alternative/non-Conventional energy technology in almost every sector. Dr. A.K Jain, Director of Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Renewable Energy, Govt. of India said that Renewable Energy can fill the existing gap of about 20% between demand and supply of electricity in Punjab. Therefore, renewable energy sources such as biomas and Solar power can be used as a supplementary source of power. He suggested to conserve energy by using CFL bulbs which produce more light and consume less power. Director General, Science City, Dr. R.S Khandpur stated that the Science City has already set up a State Level Energy park which demonstrates the uses of various forms of non-conventional energy sources including Solar, Hydel, Wind and Bio energy.
