In Akashvani’s program Spotlight, Dr. TV Venkateshwaran, Senior Scientist discussed on the growth of what is now known as the space economy and the start up enterprises that have sprung up to serve this economy, both domestically and abroad.
”
” Dr. TV Venkateshwaran discusses reason for the emergence of space economy 4.0. He said space economy 4.0 has essentially emerged because of the changing situation in the space industry as a whole. See earlier people were interested in sending robots, satellites, maybe 10 tonnes or 20 tonnes to deep space something like 35,000 kilometres from earth and so on.
”
”Through that, they established communication services and so on and then they said that exactly to function for 20 years and more. But we all know electronics is so fast advancing that even a mobile phone which is about a few years old is obsolete. So if you put a satellite which is full of electronics, 20 years old in space, I mean it's history.
”
”So now there is a new thinking that instead of putting a big satellite lasting for many years and so far away, why don't we put a lot of small satellites at the lower orbits and then decommission them and then replace them with the newer and newer satellite with the newer and newer electronics. This is a new thinking that is going on. That's why if you see in the recent past, I mean there have been a huge number of launches of microsatellites, mini satellites, some of them weighing just a 0.5 kilogram.
”
”These changes have provided new opportunities for launches, new opportunities for building satellites, and new opportunities for using space technology for several applications for common person applications, from location services to various services. This is where the ISRO and with the support of ISRO the startups which are coming up in India are expecting to garner a substantial part of this growing space economy.
”
”Doctor Venkateshwaran, also share insights regarding the partnership between ISRO and NASA. He added that ISRO is working with multiple International Space agencies. So with NASA, several projects are being planned. Some of the satellites will carry NASA payload. For example, even Chandrayaan 3 had a small payload from NASA which it carried and then collaborated with NASA.
”
”Similarly, there are some missions, including the Artemis mission of NASA and ISRO is planning to be part of it. There are several such negotiations with the Japanese space agencies.
”
”Traditionally a safe economy meant for example launching a satellite built by somebody else and then earning income from that launch or building a satellite and giving that to someone. I mean selling it and then through that earnings revenue or providing training services and through that either earning revenue or goodwill. These are the traditional space accounts. But people are now talking about space economy 4.0, something like industry 4.0, they are talking about space economy.
”
”Listen to the Full discussion at: https://www.youtube.com/live/PNPgBr2u4Ms?si=BFJ7FXAThuleUG-b
