'Akash' cheapest tablet PC launched

The world's cheapest tablet Personal Computer, Askash costing 2,276 rupees was launched in New Delhi on Wednesday. It will be available at around half this price to students as part of government's programme to expand education through information technology.

Unveiling the 7-inch touchscreen device HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said the government has set an ambitious target of bringing down the cost of such devices to as low as 10 dollars, approximately 500 rupees. For institutes, it will cost around 1,100 to 1,200 rupees. He said, the price includes taxes and cost of transportation.

The Minister said in the 12th Five Year Plan, government will provide these devices to students studying in class 9 to 12. He said the use of computers can help students access education material from anywhere anytime.
