Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar resigned as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Power Minister and Finance Minister on Tuesday over corruption charges against him. It was alleged that during the tenure of Mr. Ajit Pawar, the nephew of NCP Chief Sharad Pawar, as the Irrigation Minister of Maharashtra, there had been irregularities in awarding contracts for irrigation projects. Mr. Ajit Pawar said, he has sent his resignation to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
Mr Pawar said that he has resigned because nobody should think that he influenced the investigation, being on the post. He further said that he will go before the people to present his case and prove his innocence. He said that he is still an NCP MLA and will carry out his responsibilities.
