Aizawl FC become first Northeastern club to win I-league

In one of the biggest achievements in Indian football history, Aizawl FC today lifted the I-League crown after they held Shillong Lajong 1-1 last night. Aizawl ended the league on 37 points and became the first club from the Northeast to bag the title. In a tense match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong, Lajong went ahead in the ninth minute through A Dipanda. But Aizawl equalised in the 67th minute through W Lalnunfela. In a simultaneous match in Kolkata, Mohun Bagan defeated Chennai City FC 2-1 and finished second in the League with 36 points. All India Football Federation President Praful Patel has congratulated Aizawl FC for winning the 10th edition of the I-League. Congratulating Aizawl FC on their maiden success, Patel said Aizawl FC's triumph unfurls a new chapter in Indian Football history.AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das has said the manner in which the Club with a shoe-string budget managed to overpower the bigwigs will be spoken about in Indian Football history.
