The Union Home Ministry has put Air India and all other planes operating in the South Asia region on high security alert. This follows intelligence inputs that Pakistan based LeT and other terrorist groups are planning to hijack a flight from the region. The Special Secretary, Internal Security, Mr. U.K. Bansal said in New Delhi today that the alert has been issued after some intelligence inputs from western agencies. Mandatory secondary checks on all aircrafts operating in the region are being started following the alert and sky marshalls on flights being deployed.AIR correspondent adds that following inputs from western intelligence agencies, a directive has also been issued to all Indian missions abroad to sensitise the staff of airlines about the alert. The security has been beefed up on all airports across the country. According to intelligence reports, terrorist groups having allegiance with Al Qaeda, LeT and Jamat-ul-Dava were planning to highjack an Air India plane especially from the SAARC region.Meanwhile, reports say Pak based terrorist outfit LeT acquiring more than 50 paragliding equipments from Europe. This has further raised concerns among the government circles. Radars located at strategic locations have been turned to intercept all low flying objects, particularly in the wake of Republic Day Celebrations. A no flying zone is already in place in the national capital's Luytens zone which houses the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Prime Minister's Office and key ministries of the government. Besides this, elaborate air defence measures have been taken to check possible intrusion of air space.
