Aircraft carrier Vikramaditya to be inducted in Indian Navy in 2013

Aircraft carrier Vikramaditya will be inducted in the Indian Navy in the last quarter of 2013. Russia has revised its delivery schedule from December, 2012 to the next year. Giving this information in the Lok Sabha today.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony said the total cost of the aircraft carrier would remain 2.3 billion US dollars at the time of its delivery. The original delivery date of the aircraft carrier was August, 2008.

Mr. Antony stated that Vikramaditya was put to extensive trials for the first time from 8th June to 23rd September, 2012. A part of the Indian crew was also on board, undergoing training during the vessel's sea trials.

The ship's equipment and aviation trials were completed. But the main propulsion plant trials to full power could not be done due to defects in the ship's boiler section. The defect is likely to be rectified in six months, the Defence Minister said.
