Air raids help rebels seize Ajdabiya from Gaddafi forces

In Libya, rebels backed by allied air raids have seized control of the frontline oil town of Ajdabiya from Muammar Gaddafi's forces. Reports say, there are scenes of jubilation among the insurgents. Gaddafi loyalists had seized the town last week. The town fell to the rebels after seven nights of bombardment by allied forces, enforcing a UN-mandated no-fly zone. British RAF Tornado aircraft have been firing Brimstone guided missiles at Gaddafi forces around Ajdabiya town having a population of about one lakh people. According to a report, about 20 Libyan government tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery pieces have been either abandoned or destroyed. Large explosions were also heard in the Libyan capital Tripoli this morning. Witnesses said a military radar site was on fire in city's suburb of Tajura.Col Gaddafi is said to have ordered a universal promotion for everyone in the army and police, and proposed arming civilian volunteers. Reports say, pro-Gaddafi forces are still trying to recapture Misrata, a major western Libyan town in rebel hands.
