Air India is fully geared to take up maintenance job of the Airbus series of aircraft at the Multi-modal International Hub Airport at Nagpur. So far its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Unit – MRO, has been catering to Boeing's 777 series of planes. Air India's Chairman-cum- Managing Director Ashwani Lohani told reporters that they recently got approval from Directorate General of Civil Aviation for conducting checks for Airbus 319, 320 and 321 series of aircraft.<br/><br/>Mr. Lohani informed that Air India is eyeing external business for optimum utilization of the facility as presently only around 20 per cent of its capacity was being utilized. Nagpur MRO is the fifth with Air India Engineering Services Limited, AIESL, the technical arm of the national carrier. Other MRO units are placed in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. AIESL is aiming to raise its annual turnover from 130 crore to 200 crore rupees by servicing planes of other airlines. Talks are on with the Ministry of Defence to undertake maintenance of the defence aircraft too, he said.<br/><br/>The company has already tied up with Jet Airways and is servicing its planes at Mumbai. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with SpiceJet and talks were underway with GoAir, he added.
