Air India's monopoly over exclusive rights on bilateral traffic ends

State owned National carrier Air India would no longer enjoy exclusive privilege over all bilateral air traffic rights as the government allowed all Indian carriers to use these rights.The Civil Aviation Ministry has decided to allow all scheduled Indian carriers, including Air India, to utilise allocated bilaterals till they reach the maximum permissible limit under Air Service Agreements -ASAs with various countries.According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the allocation of the traffic rights to Indian Scheduled Carriers shall be done well in advance upto a maximum limit of five schedules keeping in mind the demands from them, their capacities and capabilities, operational plans and other relevant factors.The Ministry will take all possible steps will be undertaken to enable Indian Carriers to attain a dominating position in the region. In order to cater to peoples' travel, trade and commerce needs to countries where ASAs do not exists, the government will consider creation of traffic rights through ASAs with these countries.
