AIMPLB opposes Law Commission questionnaire on Uniform Civil Code

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, AIMPLB today said Muslim Bodies will boycott the questionnaire sent by the Law Commission on Uniform Civil Code saying that the Commission is not acting as an independent body. The Law Commission has sent out a list of 16 questions to gauge public opinion on the code. The questions include whether triple talaq should be banned or retained with suitable amendments. There are also questions on prohibiting polygamy and polyandry. <br/><br/>Briefing media in New Delhi, Hazrat Maulana Wali Rehmani said the Board is totally opposed to the Uniform Civil Code saying it is not good for the nation. Mr Rehmani said country is known for diversity and it should be respected. BJP today said the implementation of Uniform Civil Code is aimed at taking a step towards a progressive society. Party Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said the Commission is taking opinion of all the stakeholders on the issue following which it will form a considered opinion and give it to the Supreme Court. <br/><br/>Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today urged all sections of the community to "keep open" door of the debate and join the discussions on reforms without any prejudice. He told PTI that the current effort should not be looked with a prejudiced mindset, but an open mindset. Naqvi also refuted allegations that the BJP-led NDA government is interfering in the religious practices of Muslims through the Commission and said reforms are taking place in other countries too.
