AIADMK removes Ms VK Sasikala from post of interim General Secy

The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu has removed Ms VK Sasikala from the post of its interim General Secretary. The party General Body met at Vanagaram near Chennai this morning for the first time after the merger of two of its major factions. A resolution effectively scrapped the post of General Secretary saying only the memory of late leader Jayalalithaa would adorn the post.

The appointment of Mr TTV Dhinakaran as the party's Deputy General Secretary has also been nullified in today's its apex body meeting. All the actions and appointments made by Mr Dhinakaran in the party since his nomination to the post by his aunt Ms Sasikala have been declared null and void. Another resolution states that the party functionaries nominated by late leader Jayalalithaa would be permitted to continue in such positions as appointed by her. The party general council has also resolved to function unitedly and retrieve the parental party name and its 'two-leaves' symbol, that remain impounded by the Election Commission.

AIR correspondent reports that the abolition of the General Secretary post in the AIADMK and transfer of all the powers to the newly created coordinator and joint coordinator is a major shift in the structure of the party. Its bye-laws earlier said the General Secretary should be elected by all its grass root level workers spread across many states, which was seen by many commentators as a cumbersome process.

The decision to appoint Mr O Panneerselvam as the party coordinator and Mr Edapadi K Palaniswamy as the joint coordinator, has been formalized in today's meet. Formation of a steering committee to run the affairs of the party has also been enabled by way of the changes in the party bye-laws. However, with the TTV Dhinakaran camp calling today's meet as having no legal sanctity, the standoff in the party refuses to die down.
