In Puducherry, the 12-hour bandh called by the AIADMK-led Opposition evoked partial response. Even though most of the shops are closed and private buses are off the road, the government-owned buses, autos and, tempos are plying normally. Private schools are observing a holiday today. However the, government schools and offices are functioning as normal. AIR correspondent reports, the Opposition leaders belonging to AIADMK, CPI, CPI(M) were arrested at the new bus stand while they came on procession from the Nehru Street. The bandh was called to press the government to start admission of students in the newly constructed government medical college in Kathirkammam. It may be recalled that Medical Council of India (MCI) has not given its approval for want of required infrastructural facilities for the college. On a petition filed by the Puducerry Government, the Madras High Court had directed the MCI of India to visit the Medical College once again and give its report. On that direction, the MCI visited the college for the third time last week and its approval is awaited which would enable the college to start functioning from this academic year with an intake of 150 students.
