AGP snaps ties with BJP

AGP snaps ties with BJPIn Assam, the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) formally snapped its electoral ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).The decision was taken at the general house meeting of the party which concluded in Guwahati last night. Earlier, the central executive committee of the AGP endorsed the decision on the issue asking the party not to go for any electoral alliance with the saffron party. However, the final decision on the matter was left to the party’s general house, which is the supreme authority on such issues, as per the party’s constitution. Asom Gana Parishad tied with electoral understanding with the BJP during the last Lok Sabha polls held in 2009. The general house of the party also voiced its resentment against the mega dam hydel projects proposed to be set up in the North-eastern region and asked the party leadership to continue with the ongoing agitation against these mega dam projects. The delegates of the party district committees were critical of the role played by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in this regard. They also suggested a bold stand of the party on the issues like- alleged irregularities on the food security scheme and multi-crore rupees scam in North Cachal Hills district.
