AFSPA to be withdrawn from some areas of J&K

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act(AFSPA) imposed in the state at the beginning of militancy will be withdrawn in a few days from some areas. Addressing a function in connection with the Police Commemoration Day in Zevan near Srinagar the Chief Minister said the prevailing peaceful situation in the State has paved the way for the initiative. He expressed confidence that the State Police which has played a significant role in defeating militancy in the state will be able to maintain law and order in such areas.He said once peace is fully established, laws such as the Disturbed Area Act and Armed Forces Special Powers Act will be completely withdrawn.
