African Union suspends Ivory Coast unless Alassane Quattara is anointed as President

The African Union has suspended Ivory Coast unless Alassane Quattara is allowed to take over as President. The organisation said, it viewed him as the country's elected democratic leader. There is broad international agreement that Mr. Quattara won the bitterly contested the election last month but the incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo is refusing to step down. The African Union's move comes after similar move taken by the African regional bloc, ECOWAS.The UN Security Council also yesterday endorsed Opposition candidate Alassane Quattara as winner of the presidential election. Mr. Gbagbo is getting increasingly isolated even at home and violence is feared in the country with thousands of militia and soldiers allied to each side.
