In Afghanistan, hundreds of people protested against the assassination of Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, Chairman of the High Peace Council this morning. Carrying pictures and banners, they gathered outside former President's house to remember him and protest against his killing. Many wore black head-bands in mourning. They also recited the Koran. A stream of government officials also paid their respects to the departed leader. Police has made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order all over the city. 71-year-old Prof. Rabbani was killed at his home in high security diplomatic area of Kabul last evening by a Taliban suicide bomber wearing explosives in his turban.Meanwhile, preparations are on for Prof. Rabbani's funeral. President Hamid Karzai is rushing back to Afghanistan, cutting short his visit to the UN General Assembly in New York after meeting US President Barack Obama yesterday. Prof. Rabbani’s assassination is a high-profile political killing after President Hamid Karzai's younger brother Ahmad Wali Karzai’s assassination in Kandhar. Prof. Rabbani remained President of the country from 1992 to 1996. As the head of Karzai's High Peace Council, Prof. Rabbani attempted to broker peace with the Taliban. His killing is being seen as a blow to the ongoing peace efforts in Afghanistan.
