Afghanistan's eastern provinces witnessing inflow of refugees from Pak

Afghanistan's eastern provinces are witnessing inflow of refugees from Pakistan side because of military operations in the South Waziristan of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). A joint assessment by UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Afghan government recently revealed that around 440 families, mostly from FATA, are living in two districts of Kunar Province in Afghanistan. Nader Farhad, a UNHCR spokesman in Kabul told AIR that the families have been primarily supported by their relatives and Afghan communities and no formal settlement or camp has been set up for them. He said UNHCR had distributed tents, blankets and sleeping mats to the displaced families while the UN World Food Programme (WFP) is planning to deliver food to them in the near future. Mr. Farhad said UNHCR does not consider the Pakistani displaced families conventional refugees and are expected to return home when fighting subsides. The conflict in Pakistan's South Waziristan has displaced tens of thousands over the past few months, according to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
