Afghanistan is witnessing high-level of information war between the foreign forces and militant groups in addition to the conventional war. Both sides try their best to put their side of the story to the larger audience while highlighting the issue of civilian casualties committed by each other in order to win public support. Taliban’s public relations machine has been effective since long with their website being regularly updated and mobile messaging about their latest successes against foreign forces. The latter have sought to bridge the gap recently with US General David Petraeus outlining in his recent counter insurgency guidance to fight the information war aggressively. It calls upon low-level commanders to challenge disinformation and turn enemies extremist ideologies, oppressive practices, and indiscriminate violence against them. NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has intensified efforts to beat the Taliban on this front by stepping up the frequency and timeliness of the distribution of press releases and airing briefings and bulletins over local radio stations.
