Afghanistan violence ‘global extremism’ not domestic insurgency: FM

Afghanistan's foreign minister Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta has said that his country was a victim of global extremism and warned against any withdrawal of foreign troops. Addressing a press conference in Kabul last evening, the minister denied that an increase in violence was a domestic insurgency or was being perpetrated entirely by Afghans. He said the terrorists operating in Afghanistan are a branch of international terrorism adding that militants had support and training camps outside Afghanistan. Dr. Spanta also said any withdrawal of foreign forces was unacceptable for Afghanistan. The top US commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal has reportedly asked for up to 40,000 extra US troops to stem the rising violence but many within the US administration are opposed to any increase in troop numbers.
The General’s recent assessment said that militants in Afghanistan continue to receive financial and logical support from across the border in Afghanistan while the latter has accused militant groups in Pakistan of carrying out all high-profile attacks within Afghanistan.
