Afghanistan to seek 8 billion US dollars from international community to develop its basic services

The Afghanistan government will seek 8 billion US dollars from international community to develop its basic services and infrastructure during the international conference at Kabul on the 20th of this month. AIR Kabul correspondent reports that more than 60 countries including many foreign ministers will be participating in the conference. Briefing media on the preparations, the Afghan Minister of Mines Waheedullah Shahrani said the money is needed over 5 to 7 years in order to develop transportation like roads, rail links and air ports, extraction of mines, development of hydroelectric energy, capacity building, city development plans and promotion of business and private sector. He said there is a plan to provide electronic ID cards to Afghans in order to ensure better security. The minister said Afghan government will urge international community to provide technical and financial support but no funds will be pledged during the conference. It will also demand for routing of at least 50 per cent of international aid through the Afghan government.
