Afghanistan suicide attack: 9 Indians killed

In Afghanistan, nine Indians, including two Major rank Army officers were killed when Taliban carried out coordinated suicide attacks at two hotels in Kabul on Friday. Eight others, including locals and nationals from other countries also lost their lives. At least 10 people, including five Indian Army officers, have been injured in the attacks. The bombers, believed to be three in number, struck at the guest houses, particularly at Park Residence, rented out by the Indian embassy for its staffers and those linked to India's developmental work in Afghanistan.The Indians, who died in the incident included embassy staffers from consulates in Herat and Kandahar, a member of a medical mission and Government officials. They have been identified as Major Dr Laishram Jyotin Singh of Army Medical Corps, Major Deepak Yadav of Army Education Corps, engineer Bhola Ram, tabla player Nawab Khan, staffer of Kandahar Consulate Nitish Chibber and ITBP constable Roshan Lal.A Boeing 737 of the Indian Air Force Communcation Squadron is being flown to Kabul this morning to bring back the deceased and injured people.Condemning the attacks, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said the Indians who have lost their lives were on a mission of goodwill and friendship, helping to construct the peaceful, democratic Afghanistan. Dr. Singh assured of all possible support to the families of those killed. Describing it as a heinous terrorist attack, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said arrangements are being made for adequate and expeditious treatment of the injured. In a statement, he said if necessary, they will be evacuated to India.External Affairs Ministry Spokesman, Vishnu Prakash said India's relationship with Afghanistan is strong and deep and will remain so and the forces of terror will not be allowed to succeed. He said that everything will be done to see that these forces of terror are defeated.UN chief Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the suicide attacks that killed 17 people in the Afghan capital today, saying they demonstrated a senseless disregard for human life. He said deliberate targeting of civilians demonstrates once again a senseless disregard for human life on the part of the perpetrators.
