Afghanistan ratifies Cluster Bomb ban

Afghanistan has become the 62nd nation to sign the Convention on Cluster Bombs. Media report quoting International Red Cross President Jakob Kellenberger said that ratification of the convention by Afghanistan strengthens the notion that such weapons are widely unpopular in the world. Cluster bomb is a very dangerous weapon which breaks over a target and fragments into hundreds of tiny bombs over a wide area. These fragments pose long time danger to the lives of the people living around the area. It is understood that thousands of people in Afghanistan are currently living under the threat of the cluster bombs dropped during 1980s and 1990s. The convention prohibits the use, development, production and proliferation of these weapons by the signatory.
