In Afghanistan, a meeting of election commission along with electoral complaints commission and international observer groups is scheduled on Saturday to decide upon the modalities for recounting of votes at several polling centres. Electoral complaints commission has ordered recounting at around 10 per cent polling center on suspicion of fraud.

Incumbent President Mr. Hamid Karzai has got 54.6 per cent votes in the preliminary results announced this week but his margin may come down if several of his votes are annulled during the recounting process. If his percentage drops below 50, a runoff will be called between him and his nearest rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah who has got 27.8 percent votes. Sources said election commission has begun preparation for second round, if required to be held, as it has to be organized before the winter sets in and many areas become inaccessible.
