Afghanistan poll: Abdullah's decision today

In Afghanistan, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah will announce his decision today regarding participation in the second round of elections amidst indications that he may ask his supporters not to go for voting scheduled for Saturday. Dr. Abdullah’s supporters are gathering in capital Kabul today to reach a decision as the deadline for meeting their demands including removal of election commission chief expired yesterday. His campaign manager Satar Murad said yesterday that Dr. Abdullah plans to call for a boycott of election, hoping to force a delay until spring to allow time to organize a fair vote. He said the former Foreign Minister, who is facing incumbent President Hamid Karzai in the runoff, wants an interim government to run the country till then. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said a boycott of the run-off election by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah won't de-legitimize the poll. Afghanistan’s chief electoral officer has said second round of election is unavoidable and withdrawal is not acceptable. First round results had reduced Mr. Karzai’s vote-share below 50 percent following invalidation of suspected fraudulent votes and pressure of western nations for a runoff between top two contenders.
