Afghanistan observes 3 day mourning for Rabbani’s death

Afghanistan is mourning the assassination of its former President and the Head of High Peace Council Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani. Afghan Cabinet in its meeting on Wednesday declared three days mourning starting from on Thursday. As a respect for the slain leader the National Flag of Afghanistan is flying at half mast in all government and other buildings through out the country. Sayyed Makhdom Raheen, Afghan Information and Culture Minister have said that the body of Prof. Rabbani will be laid to rest on Friday morning in the Wazir Akbar Khan hill near his home.Meanwhile President Hamid Karzai has said that using a turban in suicide bombing is aginst the national dignity of Afghans as the turban is the symbol of Afghans’ honour. In a brief speech during a press conference in Kabul on Thursday President Karzai condemned the assassination of Prof. Rabbani and expressed his condolences to the people of Afghanistan. President Karzai returned Kabul on Wednesday cutting short his visit to New York where he had gone to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Prof. Rabbani was killed in a suicide bomb blast on Monday. An assassain posing as a Taliban messenger came to Prof. Rabbani’s home and detonated the explosives as he embraced his host in a gesture of greeting. The incident has been widely condemned nationally and internationally.
