Afghanistan Foreign Minister urges international community to continue commitment

Afghanistan Foreign Minister Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta has called upon the international community to continue its long-term commitment to the security and development of the war-affected country. Dr. Spanta told leaders attending the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday night that abandoning the Afghan nation, which has endured years of suffering and pain, will undermine the spirit of collective cooperation and the ideals of the UN. He said people are rightly fearful of being abandoned once again to lawlessness, extremism, and external interference. The foreign minister said any such move will undermine, for many generations to come, the moral credibility of those who fail to honour their promises and commitments to Afghans. His comments came as there is a wider debate among western nations particularly US whether to commit more troops and resources in Afghanistan. US top commander in Afghanistan has submitted a proposal calling for 30 to 40 thousand extra forces but the US administration seems divided on the issue.
