Afghanistan decides to create new police force unit

<br/>Afghan government has decided to create a new police force unit, named as Local Police Force in order to bring local security against growing Taliban-led militancy. The idea was pushed by US top commander General David Patreaus who took the lead of Afghan war early this month. A meeting of national security council led by President Hamid Karzai approved the proposal last evening. A statement said the police unit will be under the direct control of Ministry of Interior. It was also agreed that all armed groups outside the Interior Ministry be gradually disbanded and then be re-integrated into the Local Police Force as and where necessary. Some critics fear the new force would be like local militias that could undermine the central government and possibly fuel civil war. US commander had applied a similar tactic in Iraq which had proved successful. The program calls for hiring as many as 10,000 local police , who would be vetted and paid by the Afghan Interior Ministry. Afghan President had earlier objected to plans that did not place all elements of such a force under direct government control.
