Afghanistan lifted its maiden international trophy in football, by beating defending champions India, 2-0, in the finals of the South Asian Football Federation, SAFF Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal last evening. Mustafa Azadzoy in the 8th minute, and Sanjar Ahmadi in the 63rd minute, were the goal scorers for Afghanistan. Some Afghan Ministers, along with scores of football fans from Afghanistan, were present at the Dashrath stadium in Kathmandu to witness the title clash. As soon as the Afghan team was declared champions, the sky was lit by fireworks all over Afghanistan, and people started dancing and singing in joy. Many others expressed their delight by firing in the air with their guns. The celebrations continued till late night.In the final of the last edition of the tournament in New Delhi two years ago, Afghanistan had lost to India 0-4. India have lifted the coveted Cup six times, and before this final, Afghanistan had never defeated India. The next edition of the SAFF Championship will be held in India in 2015.Meanwhile Afghan President Hamid Karzai has congratulated the Afghanistan football team for winning the SAFF Football Championship.
