Afghanistan asks UN to remove more Taliban leaders from sanctions list

Afghanistan has asked the United Nations to remove more Taliban leaders from its sanctions list as part of efforts to promote reconciliation. A statement by the country’s National Security Council said that after investigations and assessments, it has recently sent a list of 47 people to the United Nations to be removed from the blacklist. The request follows the removal of 10 Taliban and 35 Al-Qaeda members from the blacklist by the world body earlier this month. The statement said that by sending the list, it took another step towards implementing the decisions of the Peace Jirga held in June. President Hamid Karzai has offered an olive branch to the Taliban and other insurgents if they renounce violence and accept Afghan constitution. Taliban has rejected the offer and carried out another suicide attack in capital Kabul last evening killing two people. Individuals on the blacklist are subject to asset freezes, travel ban and arms embargo.
