Afghanistan arrests four Taliban militants

Afghanistan's intelligence department has arrested four Taliban militants who were behind a series of deadly attacks against foreign targets in Kabul including one outside Indian embassy in October last year and an Indian guesthouse in February. Several Afghans were killed in the embassy attack while at least seven Indians died in the guesthouse attack. Spokesman for the National Department for Security (NDS) Saeed Ansari said today that the attacks were planned from Pakistan, where the Taliban have sanctuary. He said they have also arrested another Taliban group which planned to stage attacks in Kabul in coming days. The spokesman told reporters that the second group consisted of six militants who carried out attacks against Afghan and foreign forces on a highway south of Kabul and planned further attacks. Two of those held were clerics at local mosques in Kabul province. NDS officials also seized around 450 kgs of explosive materials during a raid against the group which was living in house on the outskirts of Kabul. Meanwhile, five foreign soldiers were killed today in separate incidents of roadside bombings and militant fire. A NATO statement said three died in eastern Afghanistan while two died in south of the war-torn country.
