Afghanistan: An erroneous airstrike killed 10 security forces

In Afghanistan, an erroneous airstrike killed 10 security forces in volatile Helmand province today. Afghan officials said that the incident happened after the Afghan Air Force mistakenly dropped bombs on their position. <br/><br/>Governor of Helmand, Hayatullah Hayat told newsagency AFP that at least 9 Afghan police were wounded in the erroneous airstrike in the southern province's Gereshk district and an investigation is under way. <br/><br/>He said that the airstrike happened as Afghan forces were pushing to break through the Taliban frontline in the strategic area that has been the scene of heavy fighting over the past several days. Afghanistan's defence ministry has confirmed the incident. <br/><br/>The erroneous airstrike happened more than two months after a US airstrike killed 16 Afghan police and wounded two others in the same district.
