In Afghanistan, suicide bombers equipped with sophisticated weapons attacked a government complex in Southern Uruzgan province on Thursday killing at least 19 people and injuring 37. Ten children and three women were also killed in the blasts. Official sources in Kabul said the suicide bombers simultaneously targeted many government buildings in Tirinkot, capital city of the province. Afghan police surrounded the area and the NATO troops were also called in to help the security forces. Clashes continued after the bomb blasts for sometime. Eyewitness said they heard two explosions near the governor's office, followed by heavy fighting between Afghan forces and insurgents. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. Insurgents had stepped up their attacks on government sites and Afghan and foreign forces as the first phase of security transition started in Afghanistan. On Wednesday morning Kandahar mayor, Ghulam Haidar Hamidi was killed in a suicide attack in his office, the second high-profile assassination in the province. Two weeks ago President Karzai's half brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, the head of provincial council, was killed in his house in Kandahar city by one of his trusted bodyguards. President Karzai has strongly condemned the terror attacks in Uruzgan on Wednesday.
