Afghan parliament rejects majority of Karzai’s cabinet nominees

Afghan parliament today rejected the majority of President Hamid Karzai's second list of cabinet nominees, again delivering a setback to government formation. The Parliament accepted just seven of 17 nominees including the new foreign minister Zalmay Rasoul but rejected the other ten candidates.

It had rejected 17 out of 24 nominees earlier this month forcing President Karzai to submit another list. The ten rejected today included two out of three women candidates as well as Karzai's choices for the ministries of higher education, commerce, transportation, public works, refugee and border and tribal affairs. President had urged the Parliament to consider new names and complete the exercise of government formation before the international conference at London later this month.

A Presidential spokesman has said that Mr. Karzai will submit another list if the ministerial nominees don’t get through but repeated rejections are considered a blow to Karzai’s authority whose government is battling a resurgent Taliban-led militancy. Parliamentarians have complained that some of the candidates on the president's list lacked the credentials to serve in the Cabinet. Parliament last time gave vote for the key ministers including defence, interior and finance.
