Afghan parliament asks Karzai to fill up cabinet vacancies within 10 days

Afghanistan 's parliament has asked President Hamid Karzai to fill up 11 cabinet vacancies within ten days, a sign of Parliament’s further increasing tendency to challenge the President.

A resolution passed by the lower house gave Mr. Karzai 10 days to name the vacant ministerial posts, 20 days to appoint a commission to interpret the constitution and a month to give an outline of state policy.

Parliament secretary Mohammad Saleh Saljogi said the policy outline will clarify government’s position with regard to foreigners and neighbours adding that one individual should not be able to take a historic decision without the approval of the people's delegates.

A Presidential spokesman said the government respected the house's decision and was trying its best to positively reply to the demands. Parliament had earlier rejected twice the list of ministers sent by Mr. Karzai for approval.

However, only 14 ministers were approved while 11 ministries are being run by acting ministers. Parliament also created rift with President by rejecting the latter’s decree on electoral law.

Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai called on Taliban fighters in the northern province of Kunduz today to renounce violence. He traveled to the most volatile province in the region along with US General Stanley McChrystal and met with hundreds of elders in Kunduz, the provincial capital. There were two rocket attacks in the city before Mr. Karzai’s visit but no injuries or damage were reported.
