Afghan govt rejects Karzai meeting with Haqqani

Afghanistan government has strongly rejected reports that President Hamid Karzai had a face to face meeting with leader of Haqqani network in presence of Pakistani army chief and its intelligence head. Addressing a press conference in Kabul this afternoon, Presidential spokesman Waheed Omar termed such media reports as baseless, rubbish and nonsense. He asserted that some enemies within government may be behind the report and urged media outlets to resist becoming a trap. The spokesman said doors of peace are open with those who renounce violence and accept constitution but rejected any claims of meeting between the government and Haqqani network.
Meanwhile, Afghan parliament today approved five ministerial nominees including the post of interior minister. General Besmillah Mohammadi, former chief of the army staff, was approved as interior minister, replacing Hanif Atmar, who resigned under pressure from President Hamid Kazai. Karzai submitted seven nominees for 12 vacant cabinet posts but two of them failed to get requisite votes.
