Afghan govt. proposes meeting of tribal leaders to forward peace process with Taliban

Afghanistan government has proposed a meeting of tribal elders to move forward on the peace process with Taliban-led militant groups and has invited them to join the meeting, expected to be held in coming months. Taliban has reacted positively for the first time saying it will decide soon about joining talks with the Afghan government. <br/><br/>Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf said he cannot say a word regarding these peace talks but their leadership will soon decide whether to take part in these peace talks. A major international conference in London held yesterday boosted push for negotiations to end Taliban militancy with announcement of a trust fund for bringing back militants who are willing to end violence.<br/><br/>UN Special Representative to Afghanistan Mr. Kai Eide recently met some of Taliban leaders in Dubai about the possibility of beginning peace talks with the Afghan government. Afghan President Mr. Hamid Karzai urged Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to help in the peace process as these countries are believed to be influential with Taliban leadership. <br/><br/>US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said they expect a lot of the foot soldiers on the battlefield to be leaving the Taliban because many of them have wanted to leave and are tired of fighting.
