Afghanistan government has called upon media to avoid reports and broadcasts that might create fear amongst the people during Parliamentary elections on Saturday. A statement issued by Government media and information center said they respectfully ask the media to avoid publication of articles which might undermine the confidence of voters in the electoral process and discourage them from participation. It called upon media to encourage citizens to cooperate with the efforts of Afghan National Security Forces adding that successful implementation of this second round of parliamentary elections is a major step for democracy in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the country’s main opposition leader has said that parliamentary elections should take place despite evidence that thousands of fake voter-registration cards are in circulation across the country. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who was the main contender to Hamid Karzai in the last year presidential election, said that there are shortcomings in the elections but this is the only way forward. Around 2500 candidates are in fray for 249 seats of lower house of Parliament.
