Afghan Govt. accountable to provide security to people: Hillary

The US said that it will hold the Afghan government accountable for the assistance by it and others in providing security to the people of the war-torn country. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that America is laying out very clear expectations.
Mrs Clinton, who was in Egypt on Wednesday, told the popular National Public Radio in an interview from Cairo that she spoke with Mr Karzai after the Afghan presidential election results were announced and talked in this regard.
She said, from the American perspective, it is important for Mr Karzai to establish a compact with the people of Afghanistan that would commit him and his new government to an anti-corruption campaign and to more accountability and transparency, besides building adequate security infrastructure.
In a related development, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said the US considered Mr Karzai as the legitimately elected president of Afghanistan, despite counterclaims by Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the main rival of the Afghan President.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that international commitment for rebuilding of Afghanistan is diminishing and will erode further if serious steps are not taken by new government to carry out reforms. UN special representative to Afghanistan Mr. Kai Eide said today that there is an intensive debate among donor nations contributing financial and military resources about their level of commitment.
In a related development, the UN mission in Afghanistan has decided to relocate around 900 of its foreign staff outside the country in wake of last week Taliban attack at a UN guesthouse in Kabul which killed five UN staff. The decision follows the visit of UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon to capital Kabul early this week where he urged Afghan government to provide better security to its staff.
