Afghan Governor unhurt in assassination attempt

In Afghanistan, the Governor of southern Kandahar province today narrowly escaped an assassination bid when a bomb exploded near his car as he was going to a mosque. The Governor's spokesman said that Tooryalai Wesa was on his way to prayers marking the Eid al-Adha festival when a roadside bomb detonated targeting the governor. He said that the governor was not hurt, but the windows of his vehicle were blown out and a police officer was wounded. Kandahar, Afghanistan's second largest city, is the birthplace of the Taliban movement and the home city of President Hamid Karzai. The city has increasingly come under influence of Taliban militants in past few months and a major chunk of extra US forces to be announced next week, will be based around Kandahar city. The attack came as the three-day celebrations for Eid began today. President Hamid Karzai in his message called upon those involved in violence to join the reconciliation process. However, Taliban leader Mullah Omar has rejected the call earlier saying no talks are possible till foreign forces leave the country.<br/>
