Afghanistan's Election Commission has removed nine Members of Parliament from their posts on the allegations of fraud in last year’s elections. This was announced by the Election Commission's Chairman Fazel Ahmad Manawi in a press conference in Kabul today. Mr. Manawi said that seats vacated by the disqualification will be filled by nine persons who have been declared elected in their place. The decision comes after the Election Commission reviewed the Special Election Tribunal’s findings, that has recommended expulsion of 62 Parliamentarians found guilty of election malpractices. Election for the Afghanistan’s Lower House of Parliament, Wolesi Jirga was held in September last year. Afghan President Hamid Karzai appointed the special tribunal to investigate widespread allegations of electoral irregularities in the elections. The tribunal after its investigation disqualified 62 Members of Parliament on the charges of election malpractice. Subsequently, President Karzai asked the country's Election Commission to review and implement the tribunal's findings. The Afghan Parliament has been paralyzed since it was sworn in last January because of the dispute over whether candidates accused of gaining their seats fraudulently, should be disqualified or not. There have been several protest demonstrations on the streets of Kabul by the affected politicians and their supporters. Political analysts say, the Commission's ruling could provoke fresh protests in Afghanistan.
