Afghan court sentences a British national

In Afghanistan, a court has sentenced a British national to two years in prison, considered to be the first conviction of a foreigner on corruption charges in the war-affected country. The British, working for a security company has been charged in a corruption case for bribing a pair of officials to secure the release of his vehicles. The verdict is being held-up by Afghan officials as a major victory in the fight against corruption in Afghanistan. However, some Western officials said the conviction looked more like an effort by Afghan authorities to make an example out of a foreigner while doing little to combat high-level corruption in the government of President Hamid Karzai. Corruption is a major issue between Afghan government and its western backers with the latter pressurizing President Hamid Karzai to clean up corruption while the former insisting that there are too many irregularities in disbursing Afghan aid. <br/>
