Advocates of extremism have no mandate: VP

The Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari has said those advocating extremist and terrorist causes are a miniscule minority and have neither religious nor political mandate for their actions and ideologies.

Inaugurating a two international conference on terrorism in New Delhi on Tuesday, Mr Ansari said a majority of humanity is too poor and their vulnerability is being exploited by those whose political and religious leadership have failed to make an impact.

The vice president lauded the efforts for organising such conferences as they promote inter-faith, understanding and confront national challenges and social evils. He said the pedigree of terrorism in modern times can be traced to the policies of the colonialists.

The vice president said the globalisation and technology has now made it transnational in reach and devastating in its impact.

Addressing the conference, the Health minister Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad said that terrorism undermines democracy, liberalism and civil freedom and poses a great threat to humanity.

Referring to terrorist incidents in different parts of the country, Mr Azad noted that the common man is the real sufferer. He asserted that no cause or grievance can justify killings of innocent people.

He urged the international community to rise to occasion and fight this menace effectively. He said that task has become more difficult with terrorists exploiting modern communication, technology, global financial and banking network. Participants from different parts of the world are deliberating the issue in the conference how to deal with terrorism at the grassroots.
