Senior BJP leader L K Advani has resigned from party's Parliamentary Board, Election Committee and National Executive.
In his resignation letter submitted to party President Rajnath Singh, Advani said he has been finding it difficult to reconcile with the functioning of the party and the direction in which it is going.
He said that most BJP leaders are concerned just with their personal agenda. He said, no longer he has the feeling that this is the same party which was created by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyay and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Earlier in the day, the Party President had an hour long meeting with Advani at his residence. Political observers feel that Advani was not happy with the appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the Chairman of Party campaign committee for 2014 general elections.
Meanwhile, BJP has said that senior party leaders are reaching out to Advani to reconsider his decision.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Monday, party media Convener Shrikant Sharma said that BJP believes that Advani will withdraw his resignation.
Congress has said that senior BJP leader L. K Advani's resignation from party's various posts is one of the many repercussions of Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi's elevation as party Campaign Committee chief for the 2014 General Elections.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Monday, Party General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said that Modi's appointment is the beginning of degeneration of BJP.
