Government says that adult literacy will empower the people and create better employment opportunities for them. The Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mrs. D. Purandeswari said this while speaking at the interactive meeting with State Literacy Mission authority and Zila Lok Shiksha Samities on implementation of Saakshar Bharat in New Delhi today. She underlined the importance of Saakshar Bharat keeping in context the fact that India is among the countries with the largest number of illiterates. Saakshar Bharat programme aims to impart functional literacy to 70 million non-literates in 15 plus age group in 365 low female literacy districts. Besides Basic Literacy, the programme will focus on Basic Education, Vocational Education and Continuing Education. The meeting has been convened to meet and discuss with the stake holders about the implementation of Saakshar Bharat programme and to seek their cooperation for its effective implementation.
