Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi said that the procedures for adopting children were quite complex earlier but now the process has been simplified with the amendment of Juvenile Justice, (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.

Addressing a Regional Conference with North Eastern States on Child Adoption in Shillong today, the Minister expressed concern over the enormous trafficking of young girls and women from the North East to other parts of the country and even to foreign countries. She said that women and girls from North East are being trafficked to Malaysia and Thailand.

The Union Government has come out with a new idea to tackle the menace and added that from now onwards, all the villages will have one woman police officer and she will keep a vigil whether any girl is missing from the village and domestic violence against women across the country. The Minister also said that the Government in its bid to stop the menace of trafficking of girls from the North East has setup a detection centre in Guwahati, Jalpaiguri and Sealdah.

Mrs. Maneka Gandhi also suggested the North Eastern states to focus on foster care facilities of adopted children , saying all orphan children cannot be adopted. She added that the Government formed committees must conduct regular inspections to ensure that adopted children will not be subjected to harassment and make them bonded labourers.

Ministers of social welfare, women and child development from Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura took part in the regional conference. Earlier, Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak said that though Meghalaya is a small state, yet it can fully implement the welfare schemes of the Union Government in a satisfactory manner.

The conference is being organised with a view to familiarize the stakeholders of adoption programmes about the provisions relating to adoption under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and orient them with the provisions of Adoption Guidelines – 2015 as well as the online adoption process through Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System -CARINGS.
