Adequate security deployment will be made during Jharkhand Assembly elections: CEC

The Election Commission says, adequate security deployment will be made during the five-phase Assembly elections beginning from 25th of this month in Naxal-affected Jharkhand. Addressing a press conference in Ranchi, Chief Election Commissioner(CEC), Navin Chawla said, all efforts will be made to instill confidence among voters particularly in rural and Naxal-dominated areas. Citing the example of Naxal-affected Gadchiroli, where 67 per cent voting was registered during the recently concluded Maharastra Assembly polls, Mr Chawla said, for voter participation, the EC has plans to embark on an awareness programme on Radio and Television highlighting the importance of voting. He said, candidates with criminal background will be video graphed during voting and local police officials will assist in identifying them. He said, party banners and flags will be allowed on private properties, provided the owners showed willingness for such displays. The CEC said, elderly and sick persons could come in their own transport, but no party should arrange any conveyance for the voters. The polling would be held from 7 am to 3 pm in all the five phases and there are 1.8 crore eligible voters in the state.
